Problem Being Solved

The world will continue to rely on hydrocarbon-based fuels and products over the coming decades. As such, gradual decarbonisation of the energy, chemicals and resources sectors will be necessary to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

As the largest services provider to our sectors, we are taking strong actions to provide leadership within the industries we serve and to reduce our own greenhouse gas emissions.

Solution

Worley embarked on its climate action journey over ten years ago, taking action to reduce our own carbon footprint, and as an influencer to the sectors we serve and communities in which we operate.

Worley Climate Action Journey 2010-2020

In 2020, Worley revised its Climate Change Position Statement. We committed to pro-actively engage with our customers to support the achievement of their decarbonisation ambitions and to reduce our own Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions to net zero by 2030.

We will support our customers to reduce their emissions by using our:

  • Sustainable Solutions process which to empowers our people to identify opportunities to reduce the carbon impact of our customers’ projects and to measure savings
  • Industry-specific knowledge gained from decades working with the upstream and midstream oil and gas, refining and chemicals, power and mining, minerals and metals sectors
  • Enabling digital technologies such as distributed energy systems (DES) and virtual power stations, and
  • Low-carbon technology experience including hydrogen, wind, solar, hydro and DES.

Our Responsible Business Assessment process includes risk screening the carbon-intensity of new project opportunities.

Our own net zero roadmap is in development. It will focus on reducing our energy usage and emissions intensity from our fabrication yards and 250+ offices through substitution with low-carbon energy options. We will learn by doing and our roadmap will combine the contributions of ‘top down’ projects driven by business cases for change, as well as ‘bottom up’ initiatives led by our own people who are passionate and want to drive change at a local office level.

Outcomes

We will be a partner to our customers for delivering decarbonisation and energy transition projects globally, resulting in deep cuts in emissions.

To achieve our net zero ambition, we will develop a methodology upon which to measure and report progress towards our target. This will include a rigorous process for selecting and implementing energy efficiency and low-carbon technologies. We will also harness the energy, enthusiasm and expertise of our people around this issue, enabling them to contribute to delivering a more sustainable world.
