]]>In the final days of COP28, US climate envoy John Kerry emphasised the criticality of a ‘roadmap of collaboration and sharing and building on all of our strengths.’
They are the same three principles through which the Australian Climate Leaders Coalition has been developed.
By overcoming competitive dynamics and holding themselves to a standard of doing rather than talking, CEO members have demonstrated that determination and unity sits at the heart of an accelerated emission reduction.
Their work has extended beyond their organisations and supply chains too. By sharing learnings and resources relating to Scope 3, Nature, and a Credible Transition with the broader business community, they are supporting the acceleration of climate ambitions of a far-reaching stakeholder group, in Australia and beyond.
COP28 is a place to listen, learn and to share ideas. When CEO members of the CLC spoke at one of the opening sessions last week, collaboration was the thread that connected their conversation with a diverse and dynamic series of discussions elsewhere.
Please try to find 45 mins in your week to watch that session and to see what collaborative learning and action is capable of.

]]>22 November 2022, SYDNEY: The Australian Climate Leaders Coalition, whose 48 members include some of Australia’s largest organisations, has today launched its Scope 3 Roadmap: Practical Steps to Address Scope 3 Emissions.
It is widely recognised across business around the world that reducing scope 3 emissions is critical to reaching net zero. Scope 3 emissions are both large, making up 65–95% of most companies’ carbon impact, and indirect—a consequence of a company’s activities outside its direct control.
This step-by-step roadmap is the work of Australian CEOs who have created it after undertaking five pioneering proofs of concept to identify key opportunities and strategies to reduce scope 3 emissions and create 1.5ºC aligned value chains.
“While the challenge of reducing scope 3 emissions is complex and wide ranging, it is far from insurmountable.
“The work we have done proves this. Which is why we are now sharing the lessons we have learnt and the results we have achieved, to help others and to spur action.” David Thodey, Co-Chair Climate Leaders Coalition said.
The roadmap is written by CEOs for CEOs and creates an evidence and results-based pathway that all business leaders can follow as they work to reduce their own scope 3 emissions.
“What has stood out most to me is that by moving early to reduce scope 3 emissions CEOs benefit significantly from leveraging new business models, building stronger partnerships, and accessing growth markets. What is most important is simply to take that first step starting now.” John Lydon, Co-Chair Climate Leaders Coalition said.
Former Lion CEO Stuart Irvine, who led the work on creating a carbon neutral beer value chain, identified collaboration built on trust, as his key insight from the process, stating:
“For us to tackle scope 3 successfully, we had to think beyond our own organisations; with the ability to build trusted, interdependent, and mutually accountable relationships with value chain partners being the single biggest factor driving success.
“In reducing the carbon emissions associated with beer, we achieved a rapid 11% reduction in scope 3 emissions across the value chain; whilst the BeefCo value chain changes have the potential to achieve a 42% reduction across their value chain.
“We were able to achieve these outstanding results in both instances thanks to our partners committing to a radical degree of collaboration to test, learn and scale solutions with a level of knowledge sharing and data transparency they have never contemplated before”
“Whilst this is about managing climate risk and being ready for new generations of consumers, customers, and talent. Regulation and disclosure standards are on the way. Just this month the International Sustainability Standards Board unanimously voted to require company disclosures on scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, further driving the need for leaders to step up and implement the changes now,” said Irvine.
On 23 November 2022, CLC member CEOs will join with senior Australian business leaders in a working session to discuss the roadmap and collaborate on next steps to tackle the Scope 3 emissions challenge, together.
The roadmap was first introduced by the Climate Leaders Coalition at the COP 27 Climate Conference in Egypt in November 2022.

Corporate Australia is working together through the Climate Leaders Coalition to collaborate and problem solve some of the country’s hardest decarbonisation challenges.
Uniquely, this initiative combines scale with collaboration so that CEOs learn from, help each other and share best practice as they collectively work on specific initiatives to accelerate their own actions towards a net zero carbon economy.
This united approach will help drive significant progress in creating Australia’s low carbon future while also ensuring long term economic sustainability.
“This is about business playing its part and ensuring that Australia proactively creates its own low carbon future. We believe that a responsible and equitable transition to a low emissions economy is an opportunity to improve Australia’s prosperity.” stated David Thodey, who is co-chairing the initiative along with John Lydon, the former Managing Partner of McKinsey Australia.
An initiative of The B Team Australasia, the Climate Leaders Coalition Founding Members include the CEOs of some of Australia’s largest resources and industrial companies, along with leading companies from the property, consumer goods, finance, technology, research, civil society and advisory sectors. Collectively the members have 385,000 employees and millions of customers, consumers, suppliers and shareholders, whom they want to work with to reach a low carbon future.
‘By learning from each other and about how other sectors are approaching the emissions reduction challenge, we can create value through the development of shared climate solutions while driving economic recovery and growth.’ BHP CEO Mike Henry said.
The Coalition is action orientated and is currently reviewing its challenges and opportunities around technology, energy, finance and partnerships. It will report regularly on its actions and milestones.
In addition to the practical problem-solving work that is underway, the CLC provides an open, confidential and authentic forum for CEOs to share the challenges of shifting to a low carbon future, as well as the opportunities such a shift can bring.
“In 2020, Fortescue announced our ambitious, industry leading operational target to become net zero by 2040. The Climate Leaders Coalition provides a unique opportunity to promote ongoing collaboration, ensuring Australia’s business sector is in a strong position to take the lead on the global climate change challenge.” Fortescue Metals Group Chief Executive Officer Elizabeth Gaines said.
Our member CEOs meet together to share, learn and lead. At our meetings we include guest sessions with global CEOs who are leaders in the climate field including Paul Polman former Unilever CEO, Jesper Brodin, global CEO of Ingka Group (IKEA) and Jean-Pascal Tricoire, global CEO of Schneider Electric. In addition, we talk about our own progress, opportunities and challenges, sharing ideas and progress.
Simply put, this is about bringing scale, collaboration, joint learning, commitment and leadership to accelerate emission reductions – working together to seize the opportunities, mitigate the risks and bring others on the journey.

An initiative of The B-Team Australasia, The Climate Leaders’ Coalition (CLC) is building momentum with our launch meeting having taken place on 26 August 2020. This was a roundtable session of the 22 Founding Member CEOs representing a diverse range of leading Australian companies and organisations. The CLC is jointly Chaired by David Thodey and John Lydon.
The guest speaker at the launch, Paul Polman, former CEO of Unilever and global chair of The B Team, provided global insight into similar initiatives that have successfully collaborated to solve complex and challenging climate issues. The CLC Founding Members include the CEOs of some of Australia’s largest resources and industrial companies along with leading companies from the property, consumer goods, finance, technology, research and advisory sectors. Members support the Paris Agreement commitments and either have or are setting public decarbonisation targets.
The coalition’s purpose is to help Australian business more effectively address some of the hardest decarbonisation challenges to make significant progress on emissions reduction while also ensuring long term economic sustainability. The CLC will be action orientated and provide an open, confidential and authentic forum for CEOs to share the challenges of their decarbonisation journeys. It will be inclusive and provide information and case studies to facilitate learning and fully understand their options. Simply put, this is about business becoming more effective in doing its bit to reduce emissions.
On joining, Founding Members make the following commitment:
‘For the viability of our businesses, for the generations after us and for the country we love, we are ambitious for action on climate change. If we act now, we can forge a path to create a future that is low-emissions, positive for our businesses and economy, and inclusive for all Australians. We are committed to playing our part to make that future real. If we don’t, our competitiveness is at risk.
We take climate change seriously in our business:
